Roland vdrums for me

Roland TD-15 Roland TD-11 Yamaha DTX6K Roland TD-17

Model Sold Snare Pad P/N Price
TD-11KV 2012–2018 PDX-8 $600-$1,000
TD-15KV 2012–2015 PDX-100 $800-$1,100
Pad Application Size Rim Notes
PDX-8 TD-11KV snare & toms 8" Narrow Toms, budget snare
PDX-100 TD-15KV snare 10" Wide Bigger target, more natural rebound than PDX-8. Snare upgrade, decent toms too
PDX-12 TD-17KVX snare 12" dual-rim dedicated cross-stick area + rimshot edge. Closest to acoustic snare in spacing; you can play normal stick positioning without “aiming” at a tiny pad. too big for rack toms. centerpiece of TD-17 kits
XP80 DTX6K snare 8" 2 zones TCS silicone snare = very “acoustic head” feel

TD-15 TD-11 Yamaha DTX6K TD-17

Ok, I'd be coming from Clearwater, around an hour away. The price includes a drum throne, the kick pedal & the cables, correct? Do you know which specific TD-17 model this is? I think the choices are TD-17KV, TD-17KVX, TD-17KV2, or TD-17KVX2, but I'm not super knowledagbale about these kits. Thanks!

Roland TD-17 kits

  • TD-17KV - mesh pads for the toms and snare
  • TD-17KVX - dedicated hi-hat stand for the VH-10 and superior cymbal pads.
  • TD-17KV2 - mesh head pads.
  • TD-17KVX2 - latest iteration of the KVX

difference between the K-L and the KV/KVX models is the use of rubber pads on the K-L versus mesh pads on the others

The KVX and KVX2 models come with a dedicated hi-hat stand for a more authentic playing experience. Bluetooth: The TD-17 and newer V2 versions of the module often include Bluetooth functionality, a feature missing from the original TD-17-L. V2 Update: The "V2" designation in models like the TD-17KV2 and TD-17KVX2 indicates a newer generation with various improvements to the module and pads.

other brands/models besides Roland TD-27

Guitar Center used reverb.com)

Best fits (used)

  • Roland TD-17KV/KVX (gen1)

    • Mesh feel (PDX-8/12), KD-10 kick, decent VH-10 (KVX) or pedal HH (KV)
    • Sounds solid; durable MDS rack
    • KV ≈ $850-$1000
    • KVX ≈ $1100-$1300
  • Roland TD-25KV

    • older but nicer pads/response than TD-17
    • Mesh toms/snare (PDX-100/PD-125 era), KD-9/10 kick feel is fine
    • Sounds > TD-17 (SuperNATURAL), rugged
    • Seen ≈ $1300 used Guitar Center used full kit
  • Roland TD-15KV, TD-11KV

    • budget TD-17 alternatives
    • Same mesh family (PDX-8/PD-85/PD-125)
    • good playability
    • kid-proof racks
    • TD-11/15 kits frequently available Guitar Center, eBay
  • Yamaha DTX6K2-X, DTX6K3-X

    • great feel/sounds; very available
    • XP80 TCS silicone snare = very “acoustic head” feel
    • KP90 kick is solid
    • DTX-PRO module = punchy, realistic kits
    • K2/K3 use stand-mounted hats (RHH135)
    • DTX6K-X uses pedal HH
    • Active used/new-open-box listings ≈ $750-$1180 Sweetwater, eBay, reverb.com
  • EFNOTE 3 / 3X** – premium feel under TD-27 money

    • Excellent pads/cymbals; durable; sounds very natural
    • Used pops up, but spottier supply reverb.com, Edrumcenter

How they map to your priorities

  • Snare feel
    • Yamaha XP80 TCS ≈ Roland PDX-12 > smaller PDX-8
  • Kick pedal feel
    • Roland KD-10/KD-9 and Yamaha KP90 are all solid
    • KP90 is wide & stable
  • Hi-hat
    • pedal: TD-17KV w/FD-9 style
    • DTX6K-X pedal HH
    • Stand realism: TD-17KVX w/VH-10, DTX6K2-X/K3-X w/RHH135
  • Kid-proof rack
    • Roland MDS
    • Yamaha H-style
  • Sounds
    • TD-25 ≥ TD-17 ≈ DTX-PRO
    • EFNOTE 3 is very natural.

tl;dr

If you like TD-17 but want cheaper, TD-11KV / TD-15KV or DTX6K-X are the sweet spot.
